Color Me Badd: A Sensational R&B Group with a Chequered Past
Formation and Early Success (1985-1991)
Color Me Badd emerged from the vibrant music scene of Oklahoma City in 1985. The group comprised four talented vocalists: Bryan Abrams, Sam Watters, Mark Calderon, and Kevin Thornton. Their smooth harmonies and catchy melodies quickly gained them a local following.
In 1991, Color Me Badd inked a deal with the renowned label Giant Records. Their debut single, "I Wanna Sex You Up," became an instant smash, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The album of the same name followed suit, selling millions of copies worldwide.
Controversy and Legal Battles (1992-1996)
While Color Me Badd enjoyed immense success, they also faced their share of controversies. Their provocative lyrics and suggestive music videos sparked outrage among certain conservative groups. The band's label was accused of exploiting their image and promoting promiscuity.
Legal battles ensued as former manager Robert Caldwell sued the group for breach of contract. The lawsuit dragged on for years, casting a shadow over their career.
Comeback and Later Years (1997-Present)
Despite the challenges, Color Me Badd persevered. They released several more albums and performed extensively throughout the 1990s. Their influence on R&B and pop music remains undeniable.
In recent years, the band has continued to tour and perform, albeit with a smaller lineup. They have also released new music, including a 2015 album titled "Awakening."
